Chalk it Up

I think we can all agree that over the past year or two chalkboard has defiantly grown. It went from sidewalk chalk for the wee ones to another way to decorate your home.
I myself am a owner of more than a few chalkboards. The thing is, writing with chalk was (hence the past tense.... oh it gets good) always a pain. I wondered 'how in the world do people get their chalkboards looking like a million bucks?' After poking around on google looking for tips and tricks to getting a glamorous chalkboard I came across some helpful hints. I am no master, but these few things have defiantly helped my chalkboard writing skills.

Now I'm having a whale of a time designing up our chalk board. I had something similar to this up for Christmas, but with Feb. 14 coming up I tweaked it to what you see above. The idea came from one of my favorite bloggers (her chalkboard is ah-mazing. makes me heart skip a beat).

I'll let you in on my chalkboard writing secrets...

You don't have to buy the fancy stuff. I know you can get chalk pens (which I covet), but I picked this chalk up at the dollar store and got 48 pieces for a dollar. That beats 4 for $10. It works wonderful (as long as I do the following...)

Getting a fine tip to your chalk really helps forming those fancy letters and all. It sounds crazy but all you do is take a hand help pencil sharpener and sharpen that chunk o chalk the same way you would sharpen a pencil. To maintain that sharp tip you will have to sharpen the chalk frequently.

You know that terrible chalk/finger nail screeching on the chalkboard noise? Wetting down your chalk will eliminate that and makes writing with chalk feel like you are writing with any regular writing utensil. Just dip the point of the chalk into a glass of water and write away! Just like sharpening, every once in a while you'll have to go back and dip it in the chalk again.
When you first write with the wet chalk on the chalkboard it will look slightly faded, but have no fear, it dries beautifully.

Finally, when erasing those tiny details q-tips work great!
*blurry picture!*

Now go have a chalkboard fiesta!
I'd love to see what you all come up with.

What I Wore {Mustard Yellow + Polka Dots}

Happy Hump Day!

There seems to be two things I love to wear (3&4 if you count Old Navy and my boots). One is the color Mustard Yellow, and two is Polka Dots hence the title. After seeing today's fashion post you will see this trend. Don't know what I'm talking about? Refere back to last week's post and see if you can find the yellow + dots.

My brother told me I looked like a...ummmm...bumblebee in this outfit. Will you please reassure me that he is wrong? Mkay. Thanks. I mean, bumblebee's have stripes not polka dots. Duh.
At least I hope you don't think I look like one too :)

Dress: Delia's // Cardigan: Old Navy // Belt: Delia's // Tights: Target // Boots: Payless

My sister was oh so kind, to take these pictures for me. And when you get two sisters together crazy things are going to happen. If you have ever had a situation like this it will explain the following set of pictures.

Oh, and there are like 100 more of these. I will spare you from looking at them all.

So, what do you think of this week's outfit? What are some pieces you always find yourself attracted too? I would love to hear your thoughts. And your comments Make. My. Day. I love reading them. Thank you :)

"Sew" Embroidery Hoop

Another embroidery hoop tutorial?
Yup.
Annoyed yet?

I will have you know that this is the last hoop I have, so unless I go out and buy more you won't be seeing anymore of these for a while.
But I think they are just so stinkin' cute, so I just keep cranking out more.

As you saw last week, I've got myself a gallery wall. It's filled with mostly neutral items, so I needed something to add a little color (still looking for at least one more thing. If you have any ideas shoot them my way!)

What You Need
Fabric (scraps)
Twine
Embroidery Hoop
Buttons (optional)
Sewing Machine
Thread
Hot Glue
Scissors

*please excuse the nasty basement pictures*

Start off by picking out your fabric. You'll need 3 different pieces. I have 2 'fun' patterns and a solid colored piece. Make sure that you have enough to fit into the hoop.

Iron the edges of the 'fun fabric' pieces down.

Sew the ironed side of the 'fun fabric' pieces onto your solid piece of fabric.

Cut pieces of twine for your letters.
Hot glue the letters onto the solid piece of fabric.

Add buttons (optional) to your hoop cause buttons make everything cuter.

Trim down the excess fabric that hangs off the sides. *don't trime it so short that it slides out!*

There you have it! Another embroidery hoop to add to you wall or wherever you put it!

High Five for Friday

It's Friday, Friday!
Remember that extremely annoying song that was oh so popular years ago? Poor Rebecca Black, that song has forever changed how people see her.

Anyways, we've gotten through another week, and here are some of the highlights. I am linking up to High Five for Friday-- From My Grey Desk.

(shirt: (similar)Old Navy | belt: Old Navy)
Polka dots on polka dots? It's quite a daring move for me I'd say. Polka dot obsessed.

First snow day of the school year 2012-2013 on Tuesday. We've reached almost 8 inches so far. That's a shocking amount compared to last years measly amount.

I loved pallet board art from PbTeen instantly. Too bad it's $80, and I need to go to college someday. Coupons come my way please!

If you are looking for some new blog reads we've updated our favorite blog page!

Isn't this dress just adorable?

So, tell me. What have been the highlights of your week?

What I Wore Wednesday {A Fashion Post}

Was the suspense from Monday just killing you? Were you counting down the nights/days until you could read this post? Well, today, as promised it is here for you!
I do not consider my self to be a super duper fashionable person. I do not go all out like some people do {by people I mean the pictures I see on Pinterest}, but someday I hope I will :) Fashion is something I enjoy though, and I hope this post will bring you a little inspiration at the least.

Things to keep in mind while reading this:
All pictures were taken on Sunday, right after it stopped snowing. So, as imagined it was cold freezing out side.
You may also come to the conclusion that I love Old Navy - like a lot. I think every outfit has at least 1 item from there.

Mini Gallery Wall

Hey Folks! I'm back.
Last week was exam week, so my brain was focusing on things like finding the standard deviation in math, Christopher Columbus sailing the ocean blue, and how sound gets into your ear. Turns out I passed and can now regain my life back after hours of studying.

I have this thing for pictures/picture frames. I have 13. Just in my room. That's not counting my magnet boards that I have pictures hanging on. Maybe I should get some help?
Picture frames are almost always in the mix with a gallery wall, and since I have about a billion why not make a couple into a gallery wall?!

Want to see what was the spark for this idea?
Isn't it adorable? Taylor gave it to me for my birthday and I am obsessed with it.
Print from my sister. She is a designing goddess.

Now for the gallery way...
Um. Where is the pink frame?
What can I say? I'm a fickle pickle-- constantly changing my mind on things. One moment I loved the pop of pink with the mix, and the next I was diggin' the look with the clean white frames carried throughout the mini wall. In the end I decided on the white frame look and letting the dashing pink frame live on my tiny shelves.

I am very pleased with how its come so far-- meaning it isn't quite done yet. (I just couldn't wait to share it). I'm thinking there needs to bea tiny colorful little something between the "Sew" hoop and cork board. Anybody have any ideas?
Here's a split screen just for fun.

Where I Got it
M: PBTeen (out of stock)
3 frames: Hobby Lobby
Print (in top frame above cork board)
Sew Hoop: DIY-- tutorial coming soon
Cork Board

So how'd I do it?
I really wish I took pictures of the process, but of course I didn't. So it will come to your through words.
Arranging Process
I already have a few nails/command hooks in this wall. So, I hung up the cork board on one and the big white picture frame above the M on a nail. For the other elements in the wall I traced the shape of them on a sheet of paper, cut it out, taped it on the wall/moved it to were I wanted it. (like this). I kept the paper up when we put more nails in. When you get the nail in just rip that paper off.

Marking Nail Holes
You may have seen this idea on Pinterest already. I used the toothpaste marking method. Put toothpaste on the paper-- Nail it-- Rip the paper off. Worked like a charm!

So, tell me. Are you going out of the box with any of your decor? I'd love to hear!

A Little Preview!

Happy Monday! {or late Sunday night depending on when you look!}
I hope your week is off to a great start so far, I know mine is because I don't have school today!

Remember how when Megan did her post of the Power of Accessories? Well, I decided to why not jump on the band-wagon like the rest of the blogging world and post some pictures of what I wear. Other than just the PJ's that I am in pretty much all the time other than when I'm at school.

Later this week, on Wednesday, I will be linking up with The Pleated Poppy for her What I Wore Wednesday post. But, I wanted to give you a little preview of what is to come.

Meanwhile, set your alarms, mark your calendars, and get ready! What I Wore is going live on Wednesday. Hope to you see you back :)

{Favorite} Things Friday : Modcloth

Hello lovely reader's and happy friday!

I am switching it up this week and instead of doing a 'Five Things Friday' I am going to do a 'Favorite Things Friday.' Because well...dare I say I think I may have just found a new favorite store and I just have to tell you about it, so you can see all the goodness!

I would like to introduce you to Modcloth
There is a grand possibility that I could very well spend all some of my Christmas money here. The clothes at Modcloth look like things you would find in a boutique that cost a lot of money, but some things only range from $30-$40. ((but there are definitely things more than that! ha))

While I was looking I found some adorable things that I need want. Don't get caught in the trap of major cuteness. I thought I would only look for 5 minutes...5 minutes turns into an hour really fast!

just a warning: there are some things on modcloth that when i see i think to myself 'who in the world would buy that?' so don't think i love it all and consider yourself warned :)

What's not to love about this top? Polka dots AND it's coral!

I think just about every girl in the world is in love with chevron right now! It is all the range, so this top is a must for every fashionista.

I love all the little detail on this top, and the gold dots add the perfect amount of shine!

More coral :) This would look adorable with some boots!

The perfect girly coat! Look at that darling fabric in the inside. AND emerald is this year's Color of the Year!

There is no doubt that you have to search to find something your style. At first you may hate everything you see, but keep scrolling!

Have you ever gotten anything from Modcloth? What were your thoughts? Let me know what you think!

Happy Shopping and Happy Weekend!

Power of Accessories

So I may be no fashion master but I do love me some accessories. I thought I'd throw together some of my favorite outfits with my favorite accessories and make a post out of it. So here we are!

And you aren't gonna believe this!? Guys. We are tryin something new here. We are doing our first ever link up party! I'm heading over to Pleated Poppy's What I Wore Wednesday. Woohoo! New year calls for some new things. We are hoping to do a link up every now and then for some excitement.

Don't be jealous of my awkward oh so creative posing and our eye piercing lovely photography location. Resist the temptation people cause jealousy is a sin.

(I added a link to everything I could find online. )
shirt: Charming Charlie | leggings: Old Navy | boots: Lands End | necklace: Charming Charlie
If you haven't already tried the ensamble of leggings+tunic I highly suggest you bust out a pair of leggings and find a shirt that covers your behind. The ensamble is insanely comfy, but adding a lovely knew soft knit shirt to the deal makes is 100 times better.
Before the statement necklace this outfit was fine, just not filled with much spazazz. With the orangy red bubble necklace it brightens the slightly darker outfit.

dress: Garage sale | cardigan: Old Navy | shoes: Target | earrings: Charming Charlie
Obviously I won't be wearing this outfit till at least May, but I couldn't help spice up this sundress with the sassy red earrings that came with the necklace above. Now, I realized after we took the pictures that the earrings would have been a whole lot more noticeable if i pulled my hair back. Sigh. Next time!

shirt: Maurices/ pants: Target | shoes: Payless | necklace: Grandma made | headband: Claires
This shirt is quite a statement itself so you don't want to go crazy with pairing it up with something. I went with a tamer necklace (via my Grandma) to add something to the outfit but not too much that is painful to the human eye. A tiny white braided headband also adds a little oomph.

tank top: Garage sale | cardigan: Target | pants: Lands End | shoes: Payless | necklace: Taylor made
Guess what?! I am now officially with it. I own a pair of colored pants! Yahoo! Mixing colored tops these forest green pants just may be my new hobby. Although since I am new to the colored pants world, I played it safe with a navy striped tank and gray cardi (but you can obviously see that already). And that necklace? We can thank Taylor for that. Every time I wear it people always wonder where I got it. It's a keeper.

white shirt: Target | cardigan: TJ Max | jeans: Old Navy | scarf: Old Navy belt: Old Navy | shoes: Payless
Comfy and casual but still fashionable. Knit scarves are essential for winter/colder months and the sassy polka-dot belt makes it look polished and not so baggy.

tee: Old Navy | jeans: Old Navy shoes: Target | necklace: won at bingo | belt: Old Navy | bobby pin: craft show
This tee is extremely comfy. Adding a belt and a funky necklace just makes the outfit more complete!
dress: Shade leggings: Old Navy | shoes: Payless | belt: Old Navy | necklace: Grandma made
This dress is a little boxy and looks a little frumpy without a belt. So adding a sassy kelly green belt and a simple necklace takes it from slightly frumpy to fabulous.

So what is your favorite accessorie at the moment?
